The Age of Stupid

Submitted by steffi on 8 May 2010 - 9:01pm

The Age of Stupid
‘The Age Of Stupid’  (www.ageofstupid.net) stars Pete Postlethwaite as a man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching "archive" footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance?  It paints a stark vision of a devastated future where climate change has wreaked havoc. The audience is strongly encouraged to visit the “Not Stupid” section of the website to find out how individuals can take action.

“The Age of Stupid” and Brent Friends of the Earth
In March 2009 Brent Friends of the Earth helped launch this ground-breaking environmental documentary film by Camden-based film maker Franny Armstrong, and raised funds to hold community screenings in Brent during 2010.

Brent Friends of the Earth organised a week-long series of high-profile screening events (link to Not Stupid week) for the launch week of 'The Age of Stupid' , attracting over one thousand three hundred people to watch this climate change film at The Tricycle cinema in Kilburn.

Highlights of the 16 events included Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband in conversation with the film’s Director Franny Armstrong; a packed Youth screening with Harry Potter actor Jason Isaacs; as well as former mayor  Ken Livingstone, who gave us an exclusive interview, and local MP Sarah Teather attending question and answer sessions . Sarah Teather even mentioned the film and the screening in the House of Parliament.

The 10:10 campaign  - the message of “The Age of Stupid” lives on
10:10 aims unite all sectors of society to achieve a 10% cut in carbon emissions in 2010.  The film's director Franny Armstrong had the idea for the 10:10 campaign en route to her appearance  at the Tricycle with Ed Miliband. The Guardian amongst other influential sources is promoting the campaign, and since the disastrous outcome of the Copenhagen conference in December 2009, the initiative has gained further importance. So far over 57,000 people , 2,100 businesses, 1,400 schools, universities and colleges have signed up in the UK and the campaign has now gone global. Brent Council has signed up.  Why not join in?

What you can do

Host your own screening of “The Age of Stupid”

Community screenings  are a great way to raise awareness of climate change and discuss what we can do  about it.

Brent Friends of the Earth have so far funded three screenings of the film in community centres and a church community.

If you are interested in hosting a screening in Brent, please get in touch with us by emailing ageofstupid@brentfoe.com;  all you will need to provide is the venue, a screen and a DVD player and we will pay for the license, organise local speakers for the evening and stalls by relevant community groups.

This low-budget film was funded on a shoe-string, so by holding licensed independent screenings you will also help support the film makers, Spanner Films.
