Breaking news
Following a successful public meeting on Heathrow expansion organised by Brent Friends of the Earth (FoE) in February at Willesden Green Library, the campaign group are delighted to learn that Brent Council have now ‘come out’ against the proposed expansion by joining the 2M group of Councils who oppose this development. Background

The government and BAA wish to build a 3rd runway at Heathrow Airport, claiming that it is necessary for economic growth and the maintenance of Heathrow's pre-eminence in Europe. They argue that the increasing demand for flights is a reality and that others will service it if we don't.

Arguments against the third runway
Aircraft are the fastest-growing source of carbon emissions and also emit at altitude which is 2-4 times more damaging in climate terms.

On current trends in air passenger traffic the government's target (arguably too modest) of a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 will become impossible because of aviation alone.

Expansion will lead to many homes being demolished, and there will be significant increases in noise and local pollution.

Public meeting and opinion poll
Brent Friends of the Earth held a public meeting on 21st February. More than 50 people heard our panel, including Sarah Teather, MP, speak out against the expansion of Heathrow.

We also carried out a public opinion poll, showing that more than half of Brent residents oppose the expansion of Heathrow Airport. Survey results | Presentation

What you can do
The public consultation has now closed, but it is not too late to sign the petition. Please also write to your MP and councillors and ask them to fight against the expansion.
