Two of Brent FoE's coordinator's visited friends in Germany this month (actually former coordinators of Brent FoE -Rob and Steffi). Steffi took us to nearby Kornelimünster, near the school where she teaches. There, on a couple of plaques, is the evidence of the devastating effect of flooding:
The bottom plaque shows the previous high water mark in the small town, in February 1906. But the top plaque, above Pam's head, shows the level on 15th July 2021, when the small stream that runs through the town overflowed after prolonged rainfall. More than three years later, many businesses in the town are still badly affected, or have closed down altogether. Fortunately, nobody in Kornelimünster died from the floods, but that was not the case in other parts of Germany at that time.
