Rosalie Whicheloe, Brent Principal Ecology Officer

Presentation on Ecology in Brent: Building a More Nature-Friendly Borough

At our Friends of the Earth meeting on 9th June, Brent Council's Principal Ecology Officer (at that time - she has since moved to another role), Rosie Whicheloe, outlined the borough's approach to protecting and enhancing biodiversity. The presentation explored the role of ecology within planning and development, Brent's contribution to London's newly published Local Nature Recovery Strategy, and the council's Biodiversity Duty responsibilities.

Rosie highlighted the growing collaboration between departments on initiatives such as community gardens, bee corridors, wildflower meadows, sustainable drainage, and green neighbourhood projects. She also introduced practical resources including the Front Garden Campaign, a Community Garden Map, and the Brent Nature Handbook, all aimed at helping residents support local wildlife.

The presentation emphasised that creating a greener, more resilient Brent will require action not only from the council but also from local communities and residents, particularly in protecting and enhancing private gardens and other valuable urban habitats.
